Fortuna welcomes foreign exchange students

Whether you have a foreign exchange student in your class or not, it is cool to catch up with them and see how they’re doing at your school. At Fortuna High, we have four foreign exchange students this year.

One of them being Sarah V., a senior from Belgium. Sarah says she really loves the U.S so far, she has no regrets. She says that the U.S is very different; people are more open and generous. She says that the fundraising is amazing how people give money and they really care.

Sarah likes Fortuna High; she says it’s very different. There are electives here, which in Belgium they do not get electives. She says it’s very cool to see all the different electives, sports, and games we have at our school. She really likes cooking, choir, and her teacher, Ms. Heavilin. Don’t we all love Heavilin though?

She got into the Foreign exchange program by googling it. She thought it was very interesting, and she wanted to discover a new culture and meet new people. Her advice for people wanting to be a foreign exchange student is to always say yes! When people want to give you food or show you their country, always say yes and be very open minded to everything. She says, say yes to the travel, new ideas, and do as much as you can.

Husky Leaders Have Fun!

The Californias Association of Student Leaders (CACL) presented  Leadership Development Day, a workshop day at Fortuna Union High School on September 14th  to train five high schools leadership teams excellent leadership skills. Brody Kaster, the CALC representative was a upbeat, exciting leadership trainer.

FUHS leadership students lead all the games and activities after being trained that morning quickly. Students from all clubs in the five high schools came out to join in the activities.

One of the topics at the Leadership Development Day was that the average school has only fourteen percent involvement in their after school event. Zoe, a junior at Fortuna Union High School and a FFA officer, was one of our many club members. She said “...that we need to get more people involved in our school activities. If you really think about it our school has a low percentage of involvement.”

Leadership is a really great way to get out in our community and get involved. Zoe said that she would recommend leadership to any incoming freshman or student who is interested because it makes your high school experience exciting!

Fortuna High Volleyball gets set by Arcata

Emily D., a junior at Fortuna High School, said that volleyball is a great way to make friends and it is very fun, she suggests that more freshman should play because it is a great way to meet new people.

Emily is very passionate for volleyball, “I’ve been playing since fourth grade,” said Emily, “it is a huge stress reliever.”

Emily really looks forward to spending time with her team during volleyball and winning, “we have a really great group of girls,” she explained.

Good luck this year to the Volleyball team, go Huskies!

Beverage Plus Foods changes policy about FHS students at break

John Kalinowski, an employee at Beverage Plus Foods in Fortuna, had a few things to say about the new rule involving students. He says that they did not have enough employees at the time of the high schools break to be able to watch all the students that would come into the store at that time. They don’t do as many transactions in a day because of that rule so they are losing a little amount of money.
He said, “I like it better this way because now the store is easier to handle and keep an eye on everything.” He stated that there had been a few incidents involving theft during that time of day, so that’s when they decided to make the rule that the high schoolers were not allowed there during their break. He personally did not mind the high schoolers coming into purchase things at break. Of course, it was hard to watch them but after the theft it was the best thing for their store.
Alejandro O. a student that went to beverage at break. He said that he did not like the new rule that beverage said that the students of Fortuna High couldn’t go and buy snacks and drinks during break. Alejandro would normally go to Beverage Plus Foods once in awhile. Alejandro reacted to this new rule surprised. He also said that the students of Fortuna High were furious about the new rule and he said that the only way Beverage Plus Foods gets money is because of the high school students. Alejandro O. would normally buy some gum and get some kind of drink during break.
Senior Lisandro likes long walks on the beach, hanging out with friends, and he really enjoys playing soccer.

Senior Kendall likes hanging out with her friends, watching sunsets, and she really loves the color purple.

Huskies put the smackdown on Mack Town

On Friday September 18th, the Huskies delivered a blow to McKinleyville with the defense leading the way. The Huskies shut out Mckinleyville until the 4th quarter, when senior QB Kyle S. connected with Brenden T. for a 24-yard TD pass. McKinleyville struggled against the Huskies defense all day. The Panthers passing offense only managed 159 yards in the air, a mere portion of what they usually average along with a 40 points per game average. Along with only 159 passing yards, the Panthers rushed for just 86 yards. The Panthers mustered out 393 total yards in the game with over 150 yards coming on kick returns and a 26-yard interception return.

The Huskies managed over 410 yards of just offense led by an explosive ground game. Huskies had over 310 yards on the ground with a plethora of people touching the ball. Dylan K. also had a solid game in the air as he connected a 43 yard TD pass with senior wideout Ryan W.
Churchman C., Victor D.L.S., Ben F., Ryan W., Nik L. led the way for the Huskies' scoring. The Husky defense also managed to sack QB Kyle S. 4 times with Ryan I. having two along with Victor and Ben each having a sack. Overall, the Huskies improved to 4-0 on the year, while the Panthers moved to 1-3.

The Huskies went on to beat Orland, Ca 24-17 and their next game is at Del Norte High School in a Big 5 matchup
.

The Panthers currently (1-4) roll on and take on their rivals Arcata at home. Both games will be at 7:30 on October 2nd.

Is this the year for Husky football?

This year's Husky varsity team has had a very strong start. Starting the season 4-0, with a dominant win two weeks ago over cross river rival Ferndale, and another dominant win over McKinleyville, the Huskies have their toughest game of the year so far in a week-five battle against Orland High School. The Huskies feel optimistic about the game. The playoff hopeful Huskies have a tough schedule ahead of them.

Junior Tyler Reback plays varsity football when he's not revising his work for Modes of Writing.

Golfers make first putt of the year.

The Husky golf team and their new coach, Rich Barsanti, are getting ready for their home event at the CC course on September 28th. Here’s what assistant coach Jack Millsap had to say about a few things.

Millsap was the coach for the last three years until he took up the vice principal position at FUHS.

Millsap told me that golf teaches you integrity, something a lot more valuable than strength or precision that other sports teach you. “Golf is a great sport you can play your entire life.”

Even though the tournaments are free to spectators, it would be hard for students to make it due to the times, usually noon-evening. But, if you're a golf enthusiast come see our Husky golfers.
