We need to Ban Pro-Ana Websites

By Julia Lowry

Amy Conley, a teacher at Fortuna High school, said that any website that urges students to do bad things to themselves, is an awful website. Anorexia is a fatal disease. Some of our students come to us when they are only 13-14 years old. Conley told me that her definition of anorexia is when people's lives are out of control and they eat less and less and it impacts their lives socially and academically.

Liana Hetticher a student at Fortuna High school, says that, “Overall, I think Anorexia is a weapon of the mind.” Hetticher feels that pro-ana websites need to be shut down. It's a danger to society. Hetticher states that Pro-ana websites are bad because they are encouraging young girls and boys that starve and malnourish themselves. Hetticher wants to bring awareness to these pro-ana websites, so the school can ban all the pro-ana websites they can find.

This Pro-ana website Thin Intentions  Is a blog about a 16 year old girl sharing her “Weight loss tips” to other people.

My thoughts on this blog is, What even are you thinking. You’re proud that you're killing yourself? What do your parents think about this blog you created, unless they don't know about it, but seriously why would you make a blog about a serious mental disease? I'm sorry if this sounds unprofessional, but I'm just wowed how this girl can write a blog about this and not think of the others that can do worst stuff to themselves and end up dying from it. Does she know how many people die from anorexia a year. The mortality rate for anorexia nervosa is 12 times higher than the death rate of ALL causes of death for females 15-24 years of age, according to Eating Disorder Information, up to 20% of people with serious eating disorders die. This is why I think Pro-ana website should not just be blocked from Fortuna High but from EVERY School in the United States.
